Promoting Business Professional Associations and Academic Excellence in MUBS

On Wednesday February 14, 2017 the MUBS Guild Education Minister Hon. Albert Alinda organized a workshop to discuss the different professions in MUBS. The workshop was addressed by various Heads of Department and Deans of Faculties. The Dean faculty of Vocational and Distance Education Mr. Freddie Semukono and Dean Faculty of Management and Public Policy Dr. Annet Nabatanzi K. Muyimba were among the deans who addressed the students. The MUBS degree programme portfolio includes programmes like Accounting, Finance, marketing, Transport among others. Most of these programmes have students’ Associations. The students are very proud of these associations; now and again they organize meetings to celebrate their achievements in their professions.

The Principal, Prof. Waswa Balunywa, was invited to address the students and was pleased to share how MUBS staff started acquiring professional qualifications. Prof. Balunywa said he encouraged staff in the then faculty of Commerce to do Professional courses after he was thrown out of a meeting that was discussing the ACCA Curriculum because he did not have an ACCA, despite him being a teacher.

On return to the then Faculty of Commerce in Makerere he urged his colleagues to pursue professional courses in their respective areas. Today MUBS has a policy of paying examination fees for the academic staff that successfully pass professional qualifications and many members of staff have professional qualifications now.

The business profession has to be grown and has different various sub – professions in it. You cannot know this unless you are in it. I congratulate the students for their foresight in developing and loving their professions. At one stage Uganda had only 200 qualified Accountants while Kenya had over 2000. The interest in Profession in Uganda has led to tremendous growth in numbers”, said Balunywa
