MUBS Requests National Council for Higher Education for another Visitation

The Principal Makerere University Business School (MUBS) has requested the National Council for Higher Education, (NCHE) to undertake another visitation so as to grant MUBS a University status. Prof. Waswa Balunywa made the request in his report to the First Lady and Minister for Education and Sports Hon. Janet Museveni during her visit to MUBS in March 2017.

Prof. Balunywa reported that in 2005 the McGregor Committee recommended MUBS to become a University. The Minister of education and Sports then following procedures requested the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) to undertake a visitation tour of MUBS to assess their readiness for the University status. This was done, unfortunately the visitation Committee recommended that MUBS be turned into a degree awarding Institution.

Prof. Balunywa said that MUBS is bigger than Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Gulu University and Busitema University combined, making MUBS a degree awarding Institution was an under estimate of its capacity. Many visitations have been made however, to MUBS’ surprise smaller institutions have been turned into Universities leaving out MUBS. It has been said that it is the responsibility of the NCHE to make appropriate recommendations to make MUBS a University.

The Principal reported that the conditions of a library that had earlier been set by the NCHE had already been achieved and that MUBS has built capacity at the doctoral level to run a University. He requested the Minister to call upon NCHE to make another visitation before MUBS starts losing the staff they have trained.
